Officials placed Boulder High School teacher and golf coach James Kozlowski on administrative leave Monday, following his arrest Saturday on suspicion of indecent exposure.

Kozlowski, 45, was booked and released on a summons from the Boulder County Jail on Saturday after police say he exposed his genitals to women at two separate garage sales taking place as part of neighborhood-wide event in north central Longmont.

Boulder Valley School District spokesman Briggs Gamblin said Kozlowski will remain on paid administrative leave until the police investigation and a separate district investigation are complete.

Boulder High Principal Kevin Braney also is sending a letter to parents, letting them know about the arrest. In the letter, Braney noted that the alleged incident "did not occur while this teacher was acting in a coaching or teaching capacity."

"There is no higher priority for me -- and the rest of the BHS staff -- than to have our school be a safe and welcoming place for each and every student," he wrote. "I am not aware of any concerns about this teacher's interaction with any BHS students during his tenure in our school."

Boulder High athletic director Melissa Warfield is overseeing the golf team's practices this week and accompanying the Panthers to their season-opening meet at Highland Meadows Golf Course in Windsor on Thursday.

Warfield said she plans to have an interim coach in place within a week to lead the squad for the rest of the fall.

Longmont police first received calls about Kozlowski's alleged behavior at 11:35 a.m. Saturday, according to a police report. Witnesses said that after exposing his genitals he left the scene in a new, silver SUV. Police used the SUV's license plate number provided by a witness to contact Kozlowski, who matched descriptions of the suspect, according to the police report.

Kozlowski teaches business tech and social studies at Boulder High, according to district officials. He also serves as the boys golf coach.

Kozlowski, who graduated from Boulder High, coached the school's girls basketball team to a state title in 1994. He was head coach of that team from 1992 until resigning his post in 2001, compiling a 138-57 record.

He has declined to comment on his arrest.

Indecent exposure is a class three misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail.

Kozlowski is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 26 for an arraignment.
