Ron Paul Backer Jesse Thorsen Reprimanded By Army Reserve For Participating In Political Rally

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A soldier who went on national television in his military fatigues to endorse Ron Paul's presidential campaign after the Iowa caucuses has been reprimanded but not dismissed from the Army Reserve, a spokeswoman said Friday.

The Army determined that Jesse D. Thorsen violated policies that bar soldiers from participating in political events in their official capacities or while in uniform. Experts say a reprimand may become a problem if Thorsen seeks a promotion or could be used to justify more serious punishment if he gets in trouble again.

U.S. Army Reserve spokeswoman Angel Wallace said a letter of reprimand was placed in Thorsen's official personnel file. Thorsen, who learned of the punishment following a two-month investigation, declined comment when reached by email. His supporters praised the news on a Facebook page dedicated to him, noting it could have been worse.

Thorsen, 28, showed up in his uniform Jan. 3 to Paul campaign's caucus night celebration at a suburban Des Moines hotel ballroom. There, he gave a live interview with CNN saying he supported Paul's plans "when it comes to bringing the soldiers home" because he'd served for a decade in the military during wartime.

CNN cut off the interview after technical difficulties and some Paul supporters accused the network of silencing Thorsen. Paul then called him to the stage so he could finish his thoughts before giving remarks after finishing a close third in Iowa's first-in-the-nation Republican presidential nominating contest.

"It's an incredible moment for me. I can't believe it. It's like meeting a rock star," Thorsen said while on stage. "But you know what, we're going to go to New Hampshire. We're all going to get involved. We're going to keep getting online. We're going to keep talking to people. And we are going to make sure this man is the next president of the United States."

The reaction from the military was swift. The Army Reserve said Thorsen "stands alone in his opinions reading his political affiliation and beliefs" and launched an investigation. The Army also learned from news reports that Thorsen was convicted in connection with breaking into a home in December 2004 in Fort Myers, Fla., to steal a shotgun and other items.

The statement released Friday by the military did not address Thorsen's criminal history, and it listed his rank as specialist. Thorsen had identified himself as a corporal, as did the military. Investigators could not find documentation that Thorsen had been promoted to corporal, but the Army Reserve statement said calling him a specialist is not a demotion.

"If you're an officer, a letter of reprimand is a career-ender. In the lower ranks, you can sometimes overcome it," said Greg Rinckey, a former Army attorney whose Albany, N.Y., law firm often represents soldiers and veterans. "The bigger issue is, you don't go to political rallies in your uniform. It has to be addressed because it's not appropriate."

Thorsen joined the Army National Guard in Florida in 2001, then transferred to Guard units in Illinois and Colorado before joining the Army Reserve. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 and is a member of an engineer company based in Des Moines. His unit falls under the 416th Theater Engineer Command out of Darien, Ill.

Paul's campaign had no immediate comment Friday. Rinckey said the candidate and his aides should have known better than to put Thorsen in the spotlight.

But Paul's Iowa campaign chairman, Drew Ivers, said in January that campaign officials figured Thorsen knew the military regulations before they put him on stage.

"I think it's an impromptu happening by an enthusiastic supporter who wanted to express his support for Ron Paul's candidacy," he said. "I don't think it's worth anything more than a footnote in the annals of Iowa politics and the national Republican Party primary process."

Maggie Quale: Save Our Soaps!

Most of you reading this probably don't know that the real Todd Manning finally just returned to Llanview after eight years of being held captive by his diabolical mother. Or that his twin brother Victor -- who until a few months ago was also presumed to be the real Todd Manning -- is not dead, but rather is secretly being held hostage by an equally diabolical Allison Perkins.

But to the millions of devoted One Life to Live fans, the preposterous plot-twists and over-the-top acting are part of our identities. A part that ended abruptly in January after a 44-year run on ABC. For anyone who's fallen in love with the heroine of a two-hour movie or reread a favorite novel for the fourth time, try to imagine the bond created by watching a show five days a week, every single week, for 20, 30 or even 40 years.

You probably thought only your 90-year-old granny still watched soap operas, right?

In 2011, 7.5 million people watched soaps in the U.S., a fraction of the glory years, but still an enviable following as network ratings decline across the board. To give you some perspective that's roughly the amount The Oprah Winfrey Show averaged in its own heyday.

Good riddance, you say. Farewell to predictable dialogue and cheesy love scenes. So long to Friday cliffhangers and histrionic daytime divas. Soap operas have had their 15 minutes of fame and should skulk away into the shadows like Vaudeville and silent film and Lindsay Lohan.

And while the most reasonable thing would be to set my DVR to something else and get on with my now dystopic TV-watching life, I find that I can't simply walk away.

Like countless other fans I took my post-traumatic-stress to Facebook, seeking out scarred viewers like myself. And I found them. Hundreds of thousands of fans swarming together online, seeking solace and preparing for battle.

You see, a war is on to bring soaps back from the dead. Fans are mobilizing to convince ABC to return the creative rights of One Life to Live and All My Children to creator Agnes Nixon so that they may live on somewhere else. I suppose it's apropos irony that the soaps themselves are now being held captive, because despite fans' pleas, despite other networks and production houses attempting to purchase the programs, for now our beloved Pine Valley and Llanview families are being held hostage, permanently.

ABC says it simply wants out of the soap business. In 2011, All My Children and One Life to Live were cancelled and General Hospital is expected to disappear later this year. Also this month, Disney (ABC's parent company) will phase out SOAPNet, the only niche cable channel for soaps. The network claims talk-shows, reality-TV, and self-help programming are the future and scripted shows a dying breed.

And while the past decade has seen soaps giving up the ghost across all major networks, One Life to Live's cancellation was for some reason different, a deal-breaker. Fans are saying, enough is enough. It's the first time a soap's cancellation has been met by not only sorrow and frustration, but downright defiance too. Fans have essentially refused to accept the network's decision, vowing to bring the show back if it takes months or even years.

Because fans argue that soaps aren't dying -- they're being murdered. ABC admits to having jumped on the reality-TV bandwagon because it's cheaper to produce, not because fans have abandoned scripted shows. And unlike ABC's primetime dramas Desperate Housewives or Revenge, its daytime dramas are rarely cross-advertised to prospective audiences. Fans also point to archaic ratings systems that don't accurately reflect contemporary viewing methods such as DVR and watching online, a much higher percentage for shows aired during the day while most viewers work.

When news of the cancellations hit last April soap fans sprang to action. Dozens of Facebook groups sprouted overnight, launching letter-writing and Twitter campaigns, barraging ABC and its sponsors with phone calls, appealing to celebrities for support, and urging fellow fans to boycott ABC's replacement shows and, for many, the network itself entirely. For some that meant switching their longtime local news station. Others gave up Dancing with the Stars after following it religiously since season one.

There are currently 100 groups with 150,000 active members, a significant number considering purportedly only five percent of fans seek out soap-related info on social media sites.

A key campaign is founding a new cable soap channel, an agnostic all-sudz station that would be a safe haven for all soaps, new and old, regardless of network affiliation. Fans have collected thousands of signatures, all willing to pay a monthly fee for the new channel.

Activists have already made good on a promise to boycott One Life to Live's replacement, The Revolution. So far the ratings speak for themselves. The Revolution is down nearly 50 percent from One Life to Live and rumored to be on the chopping block after only two months. Not surprisingly, last week Katie Couric publicly asked ABC not to debut her upcoming talk-show in General Hospital's timeslot, fearing poor lead-in ratings from The Revolution and a boycott from angry soap fans.

And since no conversation about soap operas would be complete without the obligatory surprise plot-twist, here goes: The biggest resistance isn't coming from the networks; it's coming from the public, legions of hard-core soap haters who are just as thrilled to see soaps die a swift, decisive death, as the fans are to revive them.

It's a strange phenomenon, considering fans of many genres have a proud history of rallying to save programs, from cult icon Star Trek to the ever-controversial animated hit Family Guy. And while non-fans might not care whether they succeed, you rarely find people hoping they fail or, worse yet, laughing at them for even trying.

Guess what? We fans know soap operas are cheesy. It's not some big secret. I spend half my time laughing at the show and the other half crying with the storylines. We love it because of the drama, the absurdity, and the tacky nuance that are tropes of this genre.

So like it or not, we fans will continue waging our war on two fronts: battling the dated stereotype that says "soap opera-activist" is an oxymoron and fighting to resurrect the deceased shows we still love (cheesy or not).

After all, if there's one lesson we've learned from decades of watching, when it comes to a soap opera, nothing is ever really dead.

How to save Europe's most threatened butterflies

How to save Europe's most threatened butterflies [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Mar-2012

This press release is available in German.

New guidelines on how to save some of Europe's most threatened butterfly species have been published by a team of scientists co-ordinated by Butterfly Conservation Europe. The report covers 29 threatened species listed on the EU Habitats Directive. Each Member State has a responsibility to conserve these species. The new report will provide crucial information on how to achieve this goal and meet their international biodiversity targets.

The report entitled "Dos and don'ts for butterflies of the Habitats Directive of the European Union" was published in the form of an "Applied Conservation" paper in the newly launched open-access journal Nature Conservation (press release on the journal launch). It includes detailed accounts of each species, their habitat requirements and food-plants, as well as a list of dos and don'ts in the management of their habitats.

European butterflies are under huge threat and almost 10% are now threatened with extinction. The European grassland indicator shows that the abundance of 17 characteristic butterflies has declined by over 70% in the last 15 years. The main reasons for the declines are habitat loss and incorrect management. Many habitats are now either abandoned from agriculture, allowing them to become overgrown with scrub, while others are too intensively managed. The new publication is thus a pivotal step to get remaining habitats better managed.

Butterflies are sensitive indicators of the environment and populations respond very quickly to habitat change. Management for butterflies will help ensure the survival of a wide range of other insects, which form the bedrock of European biodiversity. The guidelines will help ensure that European habitats are managed in a sustainable way that helps the survival of humans as well as wildlife.

The lead author, Chris van Swaay of Dutch Butterfly Conservation said "Managing habitats in the correct way is the single most important issue affecting the survival of European butterflies. This is the first time that practical information has been brought together to address the issue. We hope the advice will be taken up urgently across Europe to help save these beautiful species from extinction."

Klaus Henle of UFZ (Germany) who established the new journal in collaboration with Lyubomir Penev at Pensoft (Bulgaria) within the European Union's FP7 project SCALES says "Biodiversity loss is one of the most important topics facing the future of our planet. Our new open access journal Nature Conservation is intended to make scientific information freely available to help conserve nature and create a healthy world for everyone. The journal aims particularly at facilitating better interaction between scientists and practitioners and its major goal is to support synergistic interactions among scientists, policy-makers, and managers."

Mozilla releases BrowserQuest for HTML5 gamers and warriors (video)

Image
Mozilla is flexing its HTML5 muscles today, with a new game called BrowserQuest. Designed specifically for browser-based gaming, BrowserQuest brands itself as a "tribute to classic video games with a multiplayer twist." The game's plot is relatively routine -- warriors, hidden treasure, etc. -- but what's most interesting is its underlying architecture. Its 2D tile graphics engine is powered by HTML5 Canvas, with browser-to-server communications handled by WebSockets. Sound effects, meanwhile, are powered by HTML5 audio APIs, and each player's progress is saved using localStorage. The game also supports lots of simultaneous players, thanks to a JavaScript-coded backend that runs on Node.js. You can keep track of the player load in real-time at the BrowserQuest Dashboard (linked below). For more details, check out the source link at the bottom of the page, or click past the break for a brief demo video.

Whale caught in fishing net rescued off Calif. coast

By msnbc.com and NBC News

A California gray whale is moving freely after rescuers spent seven hours untangling it from a discarded fishing net off the Orange County coast, local media reported.

The young whale was spotted Friday night off the coast of Dana Point Harbor, Calif., covered in nearly 50 feet of fishing wire. Rescue crews suspected it had been dragging the nylon netting, which was filled with dead sea animals,?for nearly a week.

"We had a sea lion, we had several sharks?...? the whole ecosystem, you know,?was in that netting," Dave Anderson, who works with DolphinSafari.com and was part of the weekend rescue,?told NBCLosAngeles.com.

Anderson got permission from the National Marine Fisheries Services Friday evening to attach a buoy to the mammal to monitor it overnight as a team of wildlife experts assembled for a rescue attempt the following morning, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The challenge: to cut through the netting without hurting the whale, which they named "Bart" after one of the boaters who stayed with the whale overnight as it drifted up the coast, reported The LA Times.

The rescue involved seven tiring hours of sawing through the nylon as rescue crews followed the whale for mile after mile out to sea.

"It was getting very frightening towards the end of the day because we were running out of time," Anderson told NBCLosAngeles.com. Crews were using grappling hooks and lines to reel in the mammal and a knife to cut away debris, according to The LA Times. Then, at last, a line snapped as the whale dived down, pulling buoys down with it.

"Those buoys just went under the water all of a sudden," Anderson told NBCLosAngeles.?"And when they went under?the water, I mean, it was like a scene from 'Jaws.'"

When the whale came back up, he was free.

More about Bart the whale on NBCLosAngeles.com

Anderson, who?does whale-watching tours,?told NBCLosAngeles.com that many dolphins and whales die in fishing nets each year, and he's grateful to have saved one.

"He came right up to our boat and almost mouthed, like, a thank you. It was pretty awesome."

According to The LA Times, Bart was last seen four miles off Corona de Mar, and appeared healthy.

Taliban warn Pakistan lawmakers over NATO supplies

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) ? The Taliban on Sunday threatened to attack Pakistani lawmakers and their families if they support allowing NATO to resume shipping supplies through the country to troops in neighboring Afghanistan.

Pakistan closed its Afghan border crossings to NATO in November in retaliation for American airstrikes that accidentally killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. Pakistan's parliament is scheduled to begin debate Monday on a revised relationship with the U.S. that could lead to the border being reopened.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan accused Pakistani officials of acting like slaves for the U.S. and said allowing NATO supplies to resume would be "shameful and unacceptable."

"These parliamentarians must know that in such case, none of them will be safe in their homes," Ahsan told The Associated Press. "We will start attacking all the parliamentarians and their families."

Ahsan also said militants would "publicly slaughter" drivers ferrying NATO supplies.

The U.S. is eager to get the supplies moving again because it has had to spend much more money shipping goods by an alternative route that runs through Central Asia.

The supply line through Pakistan will also be key to trucking out equipment as the U.S. seeks to withdraw most of its combat forces from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Pakistan would also benefit from patching up relations because it needs U.S. assistance to help keep its struggling economy afloat. The U.S. has given Pakistan billions of dollars in aid since 2001 to enlist its support in fighting Islamist militants, but the relationship has been plagued by mistrust.

A Pakistani parliamentary commission tasked with proposing new guidelines for the relationship between the two countries last week demanded an end to American drone attacks and an apology for the airstrikes that killed Pakistani troops.

The commission also recommended that the Pakistani government charge NATO more for shipments through the country if it allows them to resume. The parliament is scheduled to begin debate on these points Monday.

Washington has expressed regret for the border incident but avoided a formal apology. U.S. officials were reportedly preparing to apologize last month but had to postpone the plan after U.S. soldiers burned copies of the Quran in Afghanistan. President Barack Obama apologized for that, bring criticism from political opponents.

High-level meetings between the two countries were mostly put on hold following the airstrikes, but lately they have started to pick up.

On Sunday, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari met with Marc Grossman, the U.S. special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, on the sidelines of a conference in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, the U.S. said.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is scheduled to meet Obama during a meeting in Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday.

The Pakistani army, and to a lesser extent the civilian government, will ultimately decide whether to restore ties with the U.S., but parliament could influence the decision. Analysts say placing the issue before lawmakers is an attempt to give the government and the army some political cover, so they can claim support of the country before quietly reopening the supply route.

Opposition lawmakers have indicated they may not back the proposed new terms with the U.S.

"If the government wants the parliament to provide guidance on certain issues and situations, then we are ready to, but the government has to convince us, because its track record regarding two previous resolutions proved to be very bad," Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the leader of the opposition in parliament, said Saturday.

Parliament passed a resolution last May recommending Pakistan cut off NATO supplies if the U.S. didn't stop drone strikes in the country. The missile attacks continued, as did the NATO supplies.

The drone strikes are unpopular among Pakistanis and have long been publicly opposed by the Pakistani army and government as a violation of the country's sovereignty. They also maintain that the attacks fan support for militancy even as they kill insurgents.

The issue is muddied by the fact that in private, the army has approved at least some of the strikes and provided intelligence on them, raising questions over whether they technically violate the sovereignty of the country. American officials rarely talk about the program in public.

War-ravaged Chechnya shows a stunning rebirth - but at what price?

The part of Europe most thoroughly wrecked and ravaged by war in the past six decades, Chechnya, has undergone a stunning transformation from ruin to rebirth in the space of a few short years.

Chechnya's regeneration has been all the more remarkable for passing largely unnoticed in the West, where images remain fresh of its capital city, Grozny, as a smashed moonscape that was often compared to Stalingrad after World War II.

But today, thanks to billions of dollars in Kremlin aid, downtown Grozny now features broad avenues ? including one named after Russian leader Vladimir Putin ? lined with luxury boutiques and new glass-fronted skyscrapers. Many of the city's once-shattered residential neighborhoods now boast clusters of graceful high-rise apartment blocks. Grozny's airport is totally refurbished and hosts daily flights to Moscow and other Russian cities. Where mine fields and piles of rubble dominated the city's center just six years ago, the marble-lined Akhmad Haji Kadyrov mosque ? reputedly the largest mosque in Europe ? now towers over the landscape with its four 197-foot minarets.

IN PICTURES ? Chechnya today: Peace at a price?

But experts say that all this physical progress has come at a high price. In exchange for peace, they say, the Kremlin has turned Chechnya over to President Ramzan Kadyrov, who runs the mountainous republic of about 1.3 million people as if it were his private fiefdom.

"Chechnya is now a nearly sovereign state within the Russian state; what goes on there would be impossible in any other part of Russia," says Sergei Arutyunov, a Caucasus expert at the official Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology in Moscow. "It's extraordinary that Kadyrov is able to be absolutely independent in his decisionmaking, while he is simultaneously completely dependent on the Kremlin for his funding. Chechnya survives thanks to vast subsidies from Moscow, yet Russian authority scarcely exists there."

Though separatist and Islamist rebels have been largely defeated and driven into a few mountain strongholds, the police state constructed by Mr. Kadyrov still holds sway. Human rights monitors say that political critics continue to disappear, though not as frequently as in the past, and no one publicly questions the growing personality cult of Kadyrov, whose bearded face gazes down from the billboards and posters that sprout almost everywhere.

Kadyrov defies Constitution

In defiance of Russia's Constitution, Kadyrov has allegedly moved to impose sharia, or Islamic, law in the tiny republic, including mandatory head scarves and dress codes for women, encouragement of polygamy, and forgiveness for so-called honor killings.

"Kadyrov has been reinforcing traditional aspects of Islamic law, including some things that violate the Russian Constitution," says Tatiana Lokshina, deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Moscow bureau and author of a report on the creeping Islamization of the republic. "If you're a woman in Chechnya, you can't really attend school or university without keeping your head covered. No woman ? not even a non-Muslim ? can enter a government building without appropriate dress and a head scarf. This is in contradiction to the rights of Russian citizens."

Ms. Lokshina, a frequent visitor to Chechnya, says Kadyrov has encouraged his own officials to take a second wife ? even when they don't want to ? and publicly warned women that if they stray from the demands of Islamic morality, it would be understandable if they were murdered by their menfolk in an honor killing.

"None of this takes the form of written legislation," Lokshina says, "but Kadyrov openly states what he wants. The only law in Chechnya today is what Kadyrov says it is."

Chechnya has been ravaged by two wars in as many decades: 1994-96, and 1999-2009. The conflicts killed an estimated 350,000 people, created hundreds of thousands of refugees, and laid waste to the entire republic. The Kremlin finally declared victory over the separatist threat in 2009 and withdrew most Russian military forces, leaving Kadyrov in charge.

Though thousands of Chechens remain homeless, life has visibly improved for the majority. "Grozny has become a modern metropolis, with new districts, good roads, sewage systems, schools, and hospitals," says Zaurbek Gakayev, a Chechen who lives in Moscow but travels frequently to Chechnya. "Electricity and running water have been restored. This is all to the credit of the state.

"And it's not only in the capital city," he continues, "but all over the republic. The changes are colossal, and they've become really noticeable in the past couple of years."

Extreme wealth, extreme poverty

While life is still demanding for most, and male unemployment by official measures was a staggering 50 percent last year (and quite possibly higher), a few Chechens have built mansions and enjoy globe-trotting lifestyles.

Kadyrov himself reportedly maintains a private zoo, with tigers and other exotic animals, on his estate near Gudermes. He hired international stars Seal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Hilary Swank to perform at his birthday party last year.

"In Chechnya, we see a regime where everyone is subordinated to one man and his circle," says Svetlana Gannushkina, director of Civil Assistance, a Moscow-based charity organization that assists internal refugees. "There is extreme wealth, which allows celebrations that cost millions of dollars, along with extreme poverty for the majority.

"Basically," she says, "the Chechens have lived with fear for so long that they've internalized it. They don't even notice it anymore; being afraid has become a part of the Chechen personality."
