Jack White fires back at ex-wife in court docs

Former White Stripes singer Jack White has provided an answer in court to his former wife Karen Elson, who had a restraining order issued against him last week and has petitioned that he submit to a psychiatric exam.

Rolling Stone obtained court documents from Davidson County Circuit Court in Nashville in which White objects to being characterized as an unfit father to their two children. In the countermotion, his lawyer Cathy Speers Johnson writes, "The reason for filing this response is that Mr. White does not want to be portrayed as something he is not, violent toward his wife and children."

The note also refers to emails the pair sent one another, including one dated May 19, 2013, where she calls him an "amazing father." The motion for a psychiatric exam is described as "inflammatory . . . . disingenuous, fraudulent and retaliatory and simply designed to malign him in the public record or to gain an upper hand in this litigation."

He said he did not oppose the restraining order, but objected to limited communication with his children.

White noted that Elson left the children in his care after signing the restraining order affidavit and then went on a "work/pleasure trip" in New York. "One who was truly fearful of another would not leave their children alone with that person for 10 days," the response noted. "The truth of the matter is that Ms. Elson is not fearful for herself or the parties' minor children."

In Elson's filing, she had referred to a musician White had particular enmity toward ? going so far as to wanting to have his child removed from a class where that musician's child was also taking part ? and White's countermotion revealed that the singer in question was The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach.?

In one email, writes? The Hollywood Reporter, White called Aeurbach a "derogatory name" and said he didn't want to spend the next 12 years of their children's schooling "with people trying to lump us together."

White's spokesperson told THR that he would only comment in court filings on the case, and Auerbach's spokesperson said he had no comment. Auerbach?is also going through a divorce, as announced in February.

Happy Birthday, Mr. President: Obama turns 52

Manuel Balce Ceneta / AP

President Barack Obama leaves Andrews Air Force Base, Md., for a weekend in Camp David, Md., Saturday, Aug. 3. The President turns 52 Sunday and will be spending his birthday at Camp David.

By Darlene Superville, The Associated Press

WASHINGTON ? Instead of "Hail to the Chief," President Barack Obama is most likely hearing strains of "Happy Birthday" this weekend.

Obama turns 52 on Sunday and is spending part of the day at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland.

The White House said little about how he's celebrating. He played golf Saturday with friends from his days in Hawaii and Chicago. Some of them joined him at Camp David.

Obama is scheduled to return to the White House on Sunday afternoon. His week ahead includes travel to the West Coast to discuss plans to help homeowners, appear on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno and visit with troops at Camp Pendleton.

He also has a White House meeting Thursday with the prime minister of Greece.

Harford Community College Holds Rape Aggression Defense ...

From Harford Community College:

Women between the ages of 15 to 59 gathered recently at Harford Community College to learn how to protect themselves from physical attack, abduction, and rape. Instructor Mary Eilerman, Harford Community College?s Chief of Public Safety, was joined by colleague Brian Hammond in the instruction of Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). The program was founded in 1989 by a police officer who recognized the need for women to better protect themselves from becoming victims of sexual assault. Since then, RAD has evolved into the largest women?s organized self defense training in the world.

The 12-hour course meets six times over three weeks and is designed to build confidence, awareness, and a deeper understanding of a woman?s full potential. Instructor Mary Eilerman remarked, ?I?m excited to watch the transformation of women from their sense of helplessness to women who are aware, confident, capable, and know how to prevent a sexual assault, and how to defend themselves in the event of an attack.?

Co-instructor Brian Hammond echoed her enthusiasm: ?For a lot of these women, this is the first time they have seen how much power and force they can generate ? they are truly unlocking their full potential. They realize that when they leave this class, they will have the tools necessary to carry themselves with confidence.?

Among the class members were four sets of mother-daughter teams. Two mothers were eager to publicize their remarks about the Rape Aggression Defense training.

Carmen Gonzales, a mother of two teenage daughters, said, ?When I saw that this was being offered, I immediately signed all three of us up! My main reason for taking Rape Aggression Defense is that my oldest daughter is going off to college in the fall. With her safety as a concern, this couldn?t have been better timing! I?m glad there is a nice variety of ages taking the RAD class since any female at any age can be a target. All three of us are glad we are learning self-defense techniques which could help save our lives and hope many other ladies will take advantage of this when it?s offered again.?

One student, who asked for her identity to be withheld, stated, ?Since my daughter will be heading off to college and will be on her own, I wanted her to complete a class in self defense. I signed my daughter and myself up for the RAD class at HCC. Learning the moves has given us both more confidence. Learning to be more aware of our surroundings and what to do in situations that could become dangerous should lessen our chances of being attacked. College social situations were discussed; what could go wrong in that environment and ways to avoid or respond to dangerous situations. The class has given me peace of mind as I know my daughter has learned many techniques to avoid an attack or protect her during an attack. I highly recommend RAD training for all women. The program is six classes, two hours each, and the cost is very reasonable. RAD was the perfect choice for us.?

Twitter UK promises more protection from online threats, showing Facebook how it's done

Take note, Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg:?the head of Twitter UK publicly apologized on Saturday to a group of women who have been the target of death and rape threats from twitter users, and announced it would make it easier for users to report abusive tweets.

?I personally apologise to the women who have experienced abuse on Twitter and for what they have gone through,? Twitter UK general manager Tony Wang said in a tweet. The company came under fire after critics said its initial response to the threats wasn't enough.?

?The abuse they?ve received is simply not acceptable. It?s not acceptable in the real world, and it?s not acceptable on Twitter,? he said.

Over the past few hours, Wang has sent out a flurry of tweets thanking people for their feedback and sending updates about new policy changes that will make it easier for people to respond to online threats.?

Twitter updated its rules and confirmed it would introduce a "report abuse" button on all platforms, including desktops.

UK police are currently investigating eight allegations of abuse including bomb and rape threats made against women.

To date, two people have been arrested for making rape threats against British MP Stella Creasy and feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez, who received the threats after a campaign to have Jane Austen put on the new ?10 banknote.

Female journalists were targeted as well:The?Guardian's?Hadley Freeman,?Time?magazine's Catherine Mayer and?the?Independent's Grace Dent all allegedly received bomb threats on Wednesday.

Mayor, who had sent in a complaint to Wang on Wednesday, bristled at the fact that she hadn't received a personal apology, saying she was?"deeply amused" by Wang's tweets. Some suggest Twitter should have taken action much sooner, and not only after some high-profile women spoke out against threats.?

But Twitter UK's apology presents a contrast from Facebook's sluggish response to reported death and rape threats, as well as racist, misogynistic and homophobic pages.

In the case of Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd, who committed suicide at age 15, after a sexual predator created a Facebook page featuring a topless photo of Todd which he obtained when she was 13. Threats to Todd through Facebook messages continued over two years, and?Facebook pages bullying Todd continue to exist?nine months after her death, despite numerous activists groups urging their removal.

Parents of both Todd and?Rehtaeh Parsons -- a 17-year-old Nova Scotia teen who committed suicide after harassment on social media after photos from her alleged gang rape were distributed -- ?have dismissed Facebook's recent policy changes, which allow "controversial" pages bullying the deceased to remain online.?

INDIANAPOLIS ? The NCAA announced changes Thursday to the way it will select teams for the men's basketball tournament, adding flexibility in hopes of keeping teams properly seeded.

The selection committee voted last week to change the bracketing principles in hopes of keeping teams where they naturally belong, Chairman Ron Wellman told reporters. In previous years, the committee has had to move a team up or down one or two lines to accommodate rules such as when conference teams can meet in the tourney.

Previously, conference teams couldn't meet until the regional final ? unless a conference had nine teams in the field.

The move comes in the wake of realignment that has seen league numbers swell over the past few seasons and has made the old rules difficult to navigate. The Big East, for instance, had 11 teams make the tournament in 2011 and 2012, and with more league expansion, conflicts seemed more likely to pop up.

The changes will not affect which teams get into the tourney. But they will allow conference teams that have played only once during the season ? including league tournaments ? to meet as early as the third round. Teams that have played twice will not face one another until the regional semifinals and teams that have played three times cannot meet until the regional championship.

Most of the conflicts didn't show up until the Sunday of selection weekend, when the bracketing debate is going full bore.

"It was a real struggle because we feel the seed lines are really important to the competitiveness of the tournament. The committee spends hours scrubbing the seeds," Wellman said. "We compare No. 1 to No. 2, No. 2 to No. 3, so on right through No. 68. At the end of the day, we feel that the seeds are in proper order. ... Then we go to bracketing, and oftentimes we move a team either within the line or we have moved a team two lines a couple of years ago, and a number of teams one line. So there was great discomfort with that."

During the call, NCAA spokesman David Worlock noted that in recent years, two teams were dropped two lines ? Marquette in 2007 and Brigham Young in 2012. Wellman also said there was a long debate in the selection room last year regarding Oregon, which wound up with a No. 12 seed and played in one of the First Four games at Dayton, Ohio.

The concern is that by moving teams from line to line across the field, it impacts the entire 68-team tournament.

"The debate was considerable as to what we should do and what was best for not only Oregon but the tournament," Wellman said. "When you move a team off of its seed line, you're not only affecting that team, but you are affecting the team that it plays and the teams that it might eventually play. So it has a tremendous impact."

To see how the new guidelines would work, NCAA staffers looked at the last three tourneys and found 90 percent of the moves were eliminated.

The biggest fans of the change might be coaches, who expressed their concerns this summer in a meeting between Wellman and representatives of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

What else will be different?

Top teams from the same conference could find themselves playing in the same region sooner than in the past.

Under the old rules, the committee was barred from placing more than two teams from one conference into the same region unless that league had at least nine teams in the field, and the top three teams from a conference had to go into different regions. Now, committee members will get more flexibility. The top four teams from each conference will be separated by region only if they appear among the top 16 overall seeds, the top four in each region.

Committee members also voted to try and avoid non-conference rematches during the First Four and the second round, and agreed to relax the rules if two or more teams from the same conference are among the last four at-large bids. Those last four would meet in the First Four.

Mano a mano over Dell: Icahn vows to fight on

Dell CEO and founder Michael Dell at a meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industries in Bangalore, January 9, 2012. Voting on a proposal to take computer-maker Dell private was delayed on Friday after Dell agreed to raise the offering price and change the vote-counting system.

The battle for Dell is far from over. Billionaire activist Carl Icahn vowed on Friday to keep fighting for control of the computer maker.

The latest skirmish came after the company said Dell's special committee had reached agreement with the buyout group led by CEO Michael Dell to purchase the company for $13.75 per share. The deal values the company at about $25 billion.

The Round Rock, Texas, company said a group led by its founder and the investment firm Silver Lake Partners will tack a one-time shareholder payout of 13 cents per share to an offer they made last week to buy the company for $13.75 per share. Michael Dell is funding the 13 cents a share special dividend personally.

The company, which has been locked in a public brawl with Icahn, has indicated it is changing its voting standard for a new, higher offer. Toward that end, Dell dramatically reduced the amount it would cost to break up the deal, to $180 million from $450 million. That may open the door for an eventual agreement with the activist Icahn, who has agitated for months to buy the struggling computer giant.

Icahn responded to the new deal via Twitter stating, "We are pleased to have won another battle in the Dell war but the war itself is far from over. More to follow."

On Thursday, Icahn filed a lawsuit to prevent Dell from setting a new record date, the latest in a series of efforts to derail the deal. According to the company, the terms of Dell's buyout agreement include moving the record date to mid-August.

(Read more: Icahn files lawsuit over latest Dell buyout offer)

Icahn isn't the only investor against the deal.

Shareholder Stephen Yacktman, in a statement, said, "The company, increases in value every month. There is no increase in valuation being paid. Shareholders are just getting paid with their own money."

He added: "If the special committee was truly concerned about the shareholders, they would let the shareholders vote on Icahn's proposal and board. What kind of board makes shareholders sue to get to be able to exercise their legal right to vote? By law, the shareholder meeting needs to beheld by mid-August."

In afternoon trading on the Nasdaq, Dell's shares rose more than 5 percent to $13.66. (For the latest stock price, click here.)

Shareholders were scheduled to vote this morning on a lower offer to buy the company for $13.65 per share. That vote has been postponed. Shareholders who own the stock as of Aug. 13 will be eligible to vote at a Sept. 12 special meeting on the new deal. The company will hold its annual meeting on Oct. 17.

Dell's founder and private equity firm Silver Lake want to take the company private, arguing that a painful restructuring can best be best performed away from stock market scrutiny.

But the battle over that deal has raged for months, adding further uncertainty about a company already shrinking along with a rapidly declining PC market.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty listens to court proceedings in the plea agreement of Ariel Castro, Friday, July 26, 2013, in Cleveland. (AP) ? Three months after an Ohio woman kicked out part of a door to end nearly a decade of captivity, a onetime school bus driver faces sentencing for kidnapping three women and subjecting them to years of sexual and physical abuse.

Prosecutors are expected to detail Ariel Castro's daily assaults on the women, recounted in diaries that compared the women's experience to that of prisoners of war. With the possibility of the death penalty for a forced miscarriage taken off the table, Castro stands to get life in prison plus 1,000 years on Thursday.

Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty said in a sentencing memorandum filed Wednesday that Castro, who chained his captives and fed them only one meal a day, "admits his disgusting and inhuman conduct" but "remains remorseless for his actions."

The memorandum says many of the specific charges in Castro's indictment reflect conduct documented by one of the women in her diary.

"The entries speak of forced sexual conduct, of being locked in a dark room, of anticipating the next session of abuse, of the dreams of someday escaping and being reunited with family, of being chained to a wall, of being held like a prisoner of war ... of being treated like an animal," it says.

The sentencing could take up to four hours, court officials said, with Castro, his attorneys, his victims and prosecutors getting a chance to speak. The legal team representing the women's interests declined to comment in advance on whether they would testify or send statements to the court.

In the court filing, McGinty offered new details of Castro's treatment of the women, who he said were kept "in a state of powerlessness" through physical, sexual and psychological violence.

"He made them believe that their physical survival depended on him, and he threatened to end their lives if they did not comply with his every demand," McGinty said.

Castro lured one of the women into his Cleveland home with the promise of a puppy for her son and tricked another by saying she could see his daughter, McGinty said.

He chained his captives by their ankles, fed them only one meal a day and provided plastic toilets in their bedrooms that were infrequently emptied, the filing said.

He menaced them with a gun, threatened them with tales of other captives, some of whom hadn't made it home, and at one point locked all of them in a vehicle in his garage for three days while he had a visitor.

Castro claimed he didn't have an exit strategy from his complicated double life and finally gave the women a chance to escape by leaving a door unlocked, the court filing said.

The women, each kidnapped separately when they accepted a ride from Castro on Cleveland's blue-collar west side, quickly escaped after Amanda Berry kicked out the door panel on May 6 and Castro was arrested within hours. The women disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 and 20 years old.

There was no comment from Castro's defense team on the eve of sentencing.

Other horrific details of the women's ordeal had already emerged, including tales of being chained to poles in the basement or a bedroom heater or inside a van, with one woman forced to wear a motorcycle helmet while chained in the basement and, after she tried to escape, having a vacuum cord wrapped around her neck.

Castro repeatedly starved and beat one of the victims each time she was pregnant, forcing her to miscarry five times.

He forced the same woman on threat of death to safely deliver the child he fathered with another victim on Christmas Day 2006. The same day, prosecutors say, Castro raped the woman who helped deliver his daughter.

Prosecutors will ask the judge to prohibit Castro from ever seeing his daughter, now 6.

McGinty says experts will also discuss how Castro was able to keep the women captive for so long.

Berry, 27, made a surprise onstage appearance at a rap concert last weekend, and a second victim, Gina DeJesus, 23, made a few televised comments as a privacy fence was being erected around her house. The third victim, Michelle Knight, 32, appeared with Berry and DeJesus in a video in early July thanking the community for its support.

Obama meeting with lawmakers on NSA surveillance

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is meeting with lawmakers to discuss surveillance programs run by the National Security Agency.

The private Oval Office meeting is to discuss concerns about privacy.

Obama's national security team is trying to keep its surveillance powers intact while acknowledging some limitations appear inevitable. The White House says Obama wants to hear from Congress directly, including from critics.

The bipartisan meeting comes after Russian authorities granted temporary asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

The chairmen and ranking minority members of the House and Senate intelligence committees were also attending. They issued a joint statement saying they've reviewed the programs in question and believe they are legal and contribute substantially to counterterrorism. They say their committees are developing ideas to reassure Americans and improve transparency and privacy protections.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) ? Kodak is providing a clearer picture of its post-reorganization management plans, saying that CEO Antonio Perez will likely be replaced in the first year after it emerges from bankruptcy protection.

The photography pioneer, which was founded in 1880, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early 2012. Since then, the Rochester, N.Y., company has sold off several businesses and said it would shut others so it can concentrate on commercial and packaging printing.

Eastman Kodak Co. said in a filing late Tuesday that Perez will stay on as CEO for up to a year or until a successor is named, whichever is first. It said he will help with the CEO selection and transition processes

Once a successor is named, he will resign and remain as an adviser until the anniversary of Kodak's exit from bankruptcy. He will serve as a consultant for up to another two years.

Kodak also announced that Jim Mesterharm will remain as chief restructuring officer and Becky Roof will continue as interim chief financial officer under a deal with AlixPartners, its restructuring advisory firm. The length of Kodak's agreement with AlixPartners will be determined by Kodak's post-bankruptcy board.

A confirmation hearing on Kodak's reorganization plan is currently expected to be held on Aug. 20.

Last month Kodak said that it had secured as much as $895 million to fund its operations after it exits bankruptcy protection, which the company anticipates will happen by the end of September.
