The incidents of rape and sexual harassment do not seem to die down with further instances of victims committing suicide as well on the rise. While Delhi grapples with the death of the 23-year-old braveheart, other states seem to witness more and more atrocities against women.
Karnataka
A village school teacher was arrested for allegedly molesting two minor girl students at Nangenatti village, about 20 km from here, police said.
His arrest followed complaints from the two 14-year-old girls to their parents, who along with other villages, beat him up and handed him over to police today.
Police said he used to lure the girls into accompanying him to the city after school hours on the pretext of buying new clothes and molest them. He had been doing this for a 19 day period from December 24, they said.
He had also threatened them with dire consequences if they complained to their parents.
A case has been registered against him under various sections of the Criminal Procedure Code, police said.
Chhattisgarh
A local Congress worker has been arrested on charges of raping his minor maid, police said here today.
Arvind Tewari, aged 35, who had unsuccessfully contested civic polls in 2009 as a Congress candidate, had been accused of rape by a 16-year-old girl, Additional Police Commissioner, Raigarh district, Praful Thakur, said.
Tewari was arrested after the medical test of the girl confirmed the criminal assault, he said.
The girl yesterday came to the police station along with her mother and complained that Tewari had raped her 10 days ago when he was alone at home, the police officer said.
She alleged in her complaint that Tewari had threatened to kill her if she tell anyone about the crime and had later again sexually assaulted her.
The Additional Police Commissioner said on the basis of girl's complaint, police had registered a case against Tewari and arrested him.
Assam
A political leader-cum-businessman was today arrested by police in the city for harassing and physically assaulting two sisters.
Police said Nandlal Kishore Soni, who reportedly claims to be Shiv Sena chief of Kamrup Metro district, entered a jewellery shop in the Fancy Bazar locality this afternoon and assaulted the two girls, aged 21 and 19, respectively.
He, along with his son, also assaulted the father and the brother of the girls.
As per the FIR filed by the girls and their family, Soni was harassing the two sisters for many months and frequently used to pass comments targeting them.
He had also reportedly threatened the sisters not to reveal anything about this.
Today he went to the jewellery shop owned by the girls' father. When the girls refused his advances, the leader threatened them with dire consequences and assaulted them, the report said.
The victims received minor injuries, police said.
Soon a crowd gathered at the spot. Police later arrested Soni while his son, whose name is yet to be revealed, was still at large.
Maharashtra
A minor girl who set herself ablaze after being allegedly molested by a boy, died in the hospital here today while undergoing treatment, police said.
The girl was a student of class V and was a resident of Rui village in Vashi tehsil of Osmanabad district, police said.
A 16-year old boy from her village had given her a greeting on the occasion of New Year. The incident had taken place on January 1 at her school.
Scared that it would bring a bad name to her family, the girl went to her home and set herself ablaze after pouring kerosene, police said.
She sustained sixty-five per cent of burns and was admitted to the civil hospital in Beed, they said adding she was later shifted to a hospital in Aurangabad, where she breathed her last today.
Police have apprehended the accused, police said adding that further investigations were on.
Punjab
Six persons were booked on the alleged charges of eve-teasing and beating up a woman in the city here today, police said.
The eve-teasers, identified as- Gogan, Shaikhu, Ravi, Honey, Shamu and Rimpa passed lewd remarks at the woman near Geeta Bhawan Road in the city, Gurdaspur(City) SHO, Gurdeep Singh said.
Later, after she protested, the accused thrashed her up, causing injuries to the victim, who has been admitted to Gurdaspur Civil Hospital, Singh said.
A hunt has been launched to nab the absconding accused while the further probes are on, the SHO added.
In Chandigarh, a 20-year-old youth was arrested here today for allegedly raping a minor girl on the pretext of marriage, police said.
On the complaint of victim's step-father, a sweeper in a dental college here, the accused Vikas raped the 14-year-old girl on the pretext of marrying her, they said.
A case has been registered against the accused, who is a taxi driver by profession.
Further probes are on into the case, they added.
Jharkhand
A physically handicapped married woman was allegedly raped at Padma, about 30 km from here, and one person has been arrested in connection with it, police said today.
"The accused, Ajit Kumar last evening raped the woman near Padma power station. He caught her when the victim was returning home after depositing her pension cheque in a bank," Superintendent of Police Manoj Kaushik told reporters here.
Alerted by the screams of the victim, local people rushed to the spot and caught Kumar and handed him over to the police, he added.
A case of rape has been lodged against the accused, and the victim was sent to a hospital for medical examination, the Superintendent of Police said.
The accused was produced before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Hazaribagh, which remanded him to judicial custody.
Uttar Pradesh
A youth was today arrested on charges of eve-teasing a constable's wife in Vijaynagar area in the district, police said.
A constable had filed a complaint against one Rahul for eve-teasing his wife, following which he was arrested, Inspector Sajesh Dwivedi said.
In another incident, police today registered a case of abduction and rape against a youth on the directions of a local court here.
The victim, resident of Sahibabad area in the district, was allegedly abducted and raped by her neighbour but the police refused to file a complaint.
It was only after she got the court's orders, the police filed a complaint against the accused. Investigations are on, police said.
