Small Business Saturday Could Be Highlight of Holiday Shopping ...

This weekend will be big for businesses of all sizes. Many stores will open their doors early, some almost as soon as the holiday meal is finished this evening. Retailers will be particularly busy, but there are holiday opportunities out there no matter what business you operate. Small Business Saturday could be the highlight of the holiday season, say some reports, but if you operate an online store, there?s Cyber Monday to consider too. Here?s the buzz from the mainstream media followed by some tips on what you can do to prepare.

Winner Takes All

Start sales small. Black Friday may be falling out of fashion, with more and more customers saying the shopping day isn?t what it used to be. Despite the hoopla, deals usually sought out by shoppers may not be as great as those earlier in the season. And while projections suggest a 20 percent increase in sales volume for online merchants Cyber Monday, Internet slowdowns are expected with so many shoppers online. This leaves Small Business Saturday, which one expert says is the real opportunity for shoppers seeking unique merchandise. Forbes

Get ready to go. No matter which shopping day will be the biggest for you, there is still time to maximize your business opportunities moving into the holiday season. Even if the big shopping weekend starting with Black Friday has caught you less prepared than you?d like, blogger Cody Ward has these simple suggestions you can implement immediately to take advantage of the holiday rush. Don?t wait! Click the link above and implement these simple tips to prepare. Puzzle Marketer

Simple Strategies

Put employees first. One unconventional suggestion from retail industry journalist Joe Keenan is to think about customers and employees this holiday season. With Cyber Monday?s increasing popularity, retailers have been moving up store openings for Black Friday to Thursday evening in an effort to maximize sales. But the move has spurred complaints from employees not happy at the prospect of starting work on Thanksgiving Day. Instead, Keenan recommends redirecting shoppers online with the same deals and free shipping, improving both sales and employee morale. BuyerZone

Sell your services. There is no reason retailers should be the only ones to get in on the act this holiday shopping season. In this post and accompanying video, Brook Kreder shares tips she is giving her own clients this year, many of them service providers, about how to maximize profits in their businesses too. Kreder suggests selling information products, pre-selling programs, partnering with retailers, or offering a one-day sale on your services as some simple solutions. Experts and Empires

Get crafty with sales. Depending upon your business, holiday craft fairs and flea markets may be another opportunity to profit on the holiday shopping trend. If you sell products appropriate to these events, hopefully you?ve already mapped out a strategy that will help you capture some of the seasonal shopping dollars sure to be spent not only this weekend but over the next few weeks. Here are some suggestions for fine tuning your approach. SBA.gov

Marketing Moves

Make the most of e-mail. As the holiday season approaches, look for an increase in the amount of e-mail in your inbox and know that your customers? inboxes will also be brimming over. If e-mail marketing is one of your top strategies, this could easily become a problem as you try to make your e-mails stand out among all the other messages your customers are receiving. Fortunately, there are a few simple tips that will lift your e-mails above the crowd and convince recipients to make them a priority. Step By Step Marketing

Market to the message. Small business owners also get a bit of a boost from Small Business Saturday itself, says content marketer Kasey Steinbrinck. It just so happens, Steinbrinck explains, that when it comes to special events now embraced by many small businesses, Small Business Saturday is the ultimate content marketing strategy. Here?s why and how this built-in marketing machine can help your business too, if you simply plug in and modulate your message accordingly. Copyjuice

No Gronk vs. Jets, but Pats still go as Brady goes

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr.

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:17 p.m. ET Nov. 21, 2012

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - There were no sighs of relief, no jumps for joy when the New York Jets found out they wouldn't have to worry about Rob Gronkowski this week.

Sure, the New England Patriots lost perhaps the league's top playmaking tight end for a few weeks with a broken forearm. But Rex Ryan's team knew better than to celebrate.

"I don't know," Ryan said, shaking his head. "They have five tight ends on their roster, so I don't know if they'll put another guy in that role. I'm not sure how they'll do it."

If Ryan has learned anything in his nearly four seasons as coach of the Jets, it's that Bill Belichick usually finds a way to win no matter who's out there - or isn't - on the field for the Patriots. Ryan also knows New England can change the personnel, but as long as it's still Tom Brady's bunch, it'll be a tough task.

"When you look at him," Ryan said, "you can almost say he's a machine back there."

And Ryan is right about the Patriots' glut of tight ends. Aaron Hernandez could return for the game against the Jets (4-6) Thursday night at MetLife Stadium after missing the last three with a sprained right ankle, and New England also has Daniel Fells, Visanthe Shiancoe and Michael Hoomanawanui at the position.

"New England is so multiple, they give you sometimes it could be four wides, five wides, could be a bunch of tight ends and all that," Ryan said. "So, we'll see as the game goes how it affects them."

Belichick was typically tight-lipped when asked if the loss of Gronkowski will change the offense for the Patriots (7-3).

"Well, we'll see," he said. "I don't know. We'll see."

Sounds as though Belichick, one win from becoming the eighth NFL coach with 200 victories, has something up his hoodie. Just as he always does. Gronkowski or no Gronkowski, the Patriots still have Brady, of course, and that's enough for anyone in New England to feel confident.

Brady was asked earlier this week if Gronkowski seemed to be in a decent mood when the two spoke.

"I haven't been thinking about his spirits," Brady said. "I've been thinking about the Jets."

Uh-oh.

A focused and determined Brady is certainly cause for concern for the Jets.

"He's going to be Brady," safety LaRon Landry said. "He's going to complete passes and he's going to be great out there. We are going against a tough quarterback."

Talk about an understatement. Brady needs one touchdown pass to extend his streak with at least one to 43 straight games - third-longest in league history behind Drew Brees (53 and counting) and Johnny Unitas (47). He has 51 career 300-yard passing games in the regular season, and one more would put him into tie for fifth place with Kurt Warner. Brady also needs 86 yards passing to move past Dan Fouts (43,040) for 10th place on NFL's career list.

"The thing about him is he's a machine, yet he's passionate and a fiery leader and all that type of stuff, so you wish he was just a machine," Ryan said. "His competitive side elevates his team as well. That's what you get in those once-in-a-generation type quarterbacks, that he's just a special guy."

The Jets know all about it, too. Brady is 4-0 with 10 TDs and one interception in his last four regular-season games against them. He's 17-5 overall when playing New York, including New England's playoff loss in the 2010 postseason.

The Patriots have also been dominant in the second halves of seasons since 2010, going a combined 18-0 so far - including 8-0 in both 2010 and `11, and 2-0 this season. That doesn't bode well for a Jets team trying to get back into the playoff hunt after a miserable start.

"This is a very important game for our season, so I'm not overly concerned with their season," Brady said. "I think about what our season is all about and what we need to do. This is a very good team. It's always very challenging to play them, especially on the road. It's a short week and there's a lot to prepare for, so it will really test our mental toughness and see what we're all about."

Well, the entire league already knows that the Patriots' top-ranked offense is efficient and explosive, as proven by their 59-24 walloping of Indianapolis on Sunday. Brady leads a steady passing game, and a four-man rotation of Stevan Ridley, Danny Woodhead, Shane Vereen and Brandon Bolden gives New England a productive and unpredictable rushing attack.

The Jets handled Brady and the Patriots' offense for much of the game the last time the teams played last month in a 29-26 overtime victory by New England that New York thought was theirs for the taking.

"When it mattered most, he delivered and they got the victory," Ryan said. "We know each other so well. We know enough of Tom Brady to know if he knows exactly what you're in, you're in trouble."

That game ended when Rob Ninkovich forced and recovered a fumble by Mark Sanchez, moments after Stephen Gostkowski kicked a go-ahead field goal in overtime. It started a string of three straight losses for the Jets, who appeared on the verge of seeing their season slip away until a solid performance last week in St. Louis.

Sanchez was efficient and mistake-free for the first time in weeks, giving the Jets plenty of hope heading into this matchup with the Patriots.

"They played really well against St. Louis if you watched that game," Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker said. "They're a physical team. They got to the quarterback. They forced some negative plays for them and really did some good things. So, they got some momentum coming off that game and we've just got to make sure that we keep our momentum going."

Both teams are cramming to prepare for their second game in five days, a short work week for such a big game.

For the Jets, a win would get them within a game of .500 and avoid a sweep by the Patriots for the second straight season. For New England, it would put them in control of the division at 4-0 with just two games against Miami left and send New York scrambling to stay in the wild-card hunt.

"You look at this as a chance to separate yourself from the rest of the pack," Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo said. "We handled the Bills and now this is a big game for us to kind of distance ourselves."

French Vintage Home? | French Essence

Do you know French Vintage Home? ?If you are mad for all things French, like me? you will love their site? Audrey Freidman and Laura McGuire share our passion for France and have created an online source for beautiful vintage wares that Audrey sources in France? I recently asked them to tell me how they started their business and what it means for them? I thought you might like to get to know them and their gorgeous French wares? With the holidays so close, French Vintage Home is a brilliant resource for those extra special and unique gifts? Their linens are nothing short of exquisite? and their kitchen wares so adorable? perfect for the friend you want to spoil or fellow Francophiles? ?xv

?Have you always had a love of all things French?

?Laura? To me, the French lifestyle and architecture is the epitome of beauty. The food, the fashion, the landscape, it is all so beautiful. As an interior stylist, my life?s work is all about creating beauty and seeking creative inspiration wherever I find it? and France never fails to inspire. When I was growing up, my Aunt had an apartment in Paris, and it seemed like the most glamorous lifestyle.

Audrey?. I have always loved France and French style. The longer I live here the more I appreciate and understand its beauty. I am a history buff and living in a 14th century village is a remarkable experience. Every day I am moved when I see an old door or piece of hardware that has been around for centuries.

?How did you two meet?and what made you decide to start an online business?

?Laura? When we met, we discovered we had a mutual love of adventure, travel, antiques, and all things French. I was interested in any business that involved spending more time exploring France.

Audrey? Because I live in France I have been shopping at the Brocantes on a regular basis. I got the idea that I could buy things that the American market might like so I started collecting. I knew I wanted a partner who could photograph the items beautifully and manage and develop a web site. My daughter-in-law told me to look at Laura?s web site and the minute I did I knew she was exactly who I was looking for.

Your website, French Vintage Home, is gorgeous?who is the creative spirit behind French Vintage Home?Is it both of you or do you enjoy different roles in the business?

?Laura? I thought of the name French Vintage Home while riding a bicycle through Normandy. We had discussed several names, but French Vintage Home seemed to say it all, very simply. I am the creative force behind the website. I worked very closely with our web builder, and it is a slow and tedious process to get the ideas in your head translated onto the web. My experience as a stylist and photographer has given French Vintage Home its? look and feel.?We do have different roles. Audrey, living in France, does all the buying and is fluent in French. Audrey has strength in sales and promotion, and I am all about the beauty. We ship the items to the US and I photograph and manage the website and shipping.

Audrey? I would say both of us. I buy all the things and Laura photographs them and puts them on our site. I try and find things that keep the integrity of French Vintage Home that are lovely and affordable.

Audrey, you spend many months in France? Tell us about your life in the Dordogne? the day to day and the reasons that it is home for you.

I adore old houses and the creative process of renovating them. In 1998 I bought a 15th century Chateau that was a ruin. Along with a beaux-arts architect it was restored to its original beauty with all the necessary modern conveniences like bathrooms and the internet. I have subsequently bought a 14th century village house which I had renovatedand is now for sale. I am looking for another great property to renovate?and know that I will find it soon. A typical day for me is to take a long walk with my little Maltese dog Skye and?then stopping for a caf? au lait and a croissant. I must say as Skye and I are getting a bit older, our walks are a bit shorter. She gives me no relief if I decide not to go out one day, she barks until we go.?I shop for food every day at the local boulangerie, green grocer and boucherie. I avoid the supermarkets as I have enough of them in the U.S.

Because I have so many friends from all over the world, I am either going to their houses for dinner or they to mine. I have a passion for cooking and setting a beautiful table. I owned a table linen manufacturing and importing company for many years so setting tables and buying dinnerware were my favorite things to do, they still are. My collection of dishes and linens is well used as I try to set the table differently for each dinner party. Entertaining is something I do with great pleasure, I truly enjoy it.?I am blessed to have a very large family and many times during the year my children and grandchildren come and visit me. I am happiest when they are there.

Laura, your photography and styling on French Vintage Home makes me want to jump right into the images? Have you always had a love for French textiles and antiques?

I have always had a thing for linens, French in particular, and have a large collection of my own. I was an antique dealer when I lived in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California. I seek out items that have a past and a well-worn patina. They bring a sense of history to our homes and a way of honoring those who came before us. For instance, I love old, French, mix and matched flatware? the weight, the smooth finish, the sense that you are the only one with this special collection. I use to dream as a child about discovering secret, forgotten rooms in old homes filled with antiques, so I guess I have always gravitated toward things worth saving and collecting.

Audrey? I adore Laura?s images also. We both love French textiles.

While I had my company we had a license with Ralph Lauren to do all the table linens for him so I do love designing new things. However, I have a very soft spot in my heart for French vintage sheets, tablecloths and antique toile de jouy fabric.

?What are your favorite French collectables?

?Laura? I think our favorite antiques evolve and change over time, but my love of linens and tabletop has always been a constant. I especially love French cream ware dishes right now, mixed with lovely monogrammed linens.

Audrey? Aside from textiles, I love all things kitchen and buy as much vintage silver cutlery and serving pieces as I can find. There is something wonderful about picking through lots and lots of things just to find the few beautiful pieces for French Vintage Home.

?French Vintage Home? Here?

Electronic Communication Made Easy With SMTP Server

The development in the world of technology has made the world a better place to live in and has made it smaller as well. Connections now can be established in a fraction of a second and a far reaching friend can now be reached on the click of a button. All thanks to the revolution the advancement of technology has created in the world of electronic communication. Staying connected no matter in which ever part of the world you are in is no longer a problem.

Well, emails are sent both for official and personal purpose. It is all about getting your message reached to the other end. When we talk of sending and receiving emails then the first name that comes in our mind is that of the SMTP server. Installing the SMTP server is one of the fastest and easiest ways to get your email from one place to another.

Once you transmit your mail to the SMTP server, it takes the responsibility of sending it out. In case some failure occurs, it will be re sending it again and again. It is because that the SMTP server is constantly connected to the internet, it can try re sending its failures at any time and for any number of times. This is the reason that you do not need to worry about failed

affiliate_link recipients.

If you are sending directly, you will need to re send to the temporarily failed recipients many times over to make sure that all the addresses are covered. But this is not just the one advantage of SMTP. The SMTP mail server comes as a free component along with Windows in Microsoft Outlook. It was developed for the purpose of sending mails, managing mail queues and the like.

We never try to find out what happens when we press the Send button of our mail as long as it works. When you send your mail through a SMTP server then it is unlikely to be blocked at the destination. However, if you sending directly, some of the destination servers can block your mail as they know that your computer is not a regular SMTP server.

Let us take a look at some of the situations when you cannot use a SMTP server:

  • Your service provider does not allow you
  • Your SMTP mail server limits you to a limited number of messages per hour or has other limitations that you cannot bypass.
The SMTP server therefore makes it possible for clients, colleagues and you to relay messages fast and in a hassle free manner no matter in whichever part of world one is in.

HP accuses Autonomy of wrongdoing, takes $8.8 billion charge

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co stunned Wall Street by alleging a massive accounting scandal at its British software unit Autonomy and taking an $8.8 billion writedown, the latest in a string of reversals that renewed questions about the competence of the storied company's board and senior managers.

HP said on Tuesday it discovered "serious accounting improprieties" and "a willful effort by Autonomy to mislead shareholders," after a whistleblower came forward following the May ouster of former Autonomy Chief Executive Mike Lynch.

The news sent the company's shares plunging 12 percent to a 10-year low of $11.71. HP, which for decades was synonymous with technical excellence and innovation as one of the bedrock companies of Silicon Valley, now has a market value of roughly $20 billion, down from $155 billion in April of 2000.

CEO Meg Whitman took the helm at HP a little over a year ago when her predecessor, Leo Apotheker, was fired after less than a year on the job. Apotheker's one big strategic move during his brief tenure was the $11 billion acquisition of Autonomy, intended to hasten HP's transformation into a software and services company but criticized by many analysts as over-priced.

"Most of the board was here and voted for this deal, and we feel terribly about that," Whitman said on a call with analysts.

Tuesday's announcement came just three months after the company took a write-down of almost $11 billion on its EDS services division.

HP has for years relied on deal-making, acquiring businesses ranging from EDS to Compaq to Palm, but has largely failed to articulate a clear strategy or establish a strong position in growth businesses like computer services or mobile computing.

"To put it bluntly ... this story has been an unmitigated train wreck, and it seems every time management speaks to the Street, there is new negative incremental information forthcoming," said ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall.

HP said it has referred the alleged accounting wrongdoing at Autonomy to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's enforcement division and the UK's Serious Fraud Office for civil and criminal investigation. HP also said it would take legal action to recoup "what we can for our shareholders."

Both agencies declined to comment.

Lynch, in an interview with Reuters, "flatly rejected" HP's allegations and said he was "shocked" but confident he would be absolved of any misdeeds. The Irish-born executive said he had not been notified by HP about the allegation before it was made public, nor had he been contacted by any authorities.

Whitman said the investigation of Autonomy's finances - both external and internal - will take multiple years as it wends it way through the courts in both countries.

She defended the board's handling of the acquisition and blamed HP's auditors for failing to detect the problems.

"The board relied on audited financials, audited by Deloitte. Not Brand X accounting firm, but Deloitte," she said, adding that KPMG was hired to audit Deloitte.

"Neither of them saw what we now see after someone came forward to point us in the right direction," Whitman said.

The alleged accounting issues also put a spotlight on the investment banks and law firms involved in the acquisition.

Autonomy was represented by Frank Quattrone, an investment banker who was the target of widespread criticism - and criminal prosecution - for his activities during the first dot-com boom. After one trial ended in a hung jury and a second ended in a guilty verdict that was overturned on appeal, the charges were ultimately dropped.

HP's lead advisor was Perella Weinberg, a boutique investment bank with little experience in big tech deals. Its attorneys included the blue-chip firms Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher; Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer; Drinker Biddle & Reath; and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, which advised the board.

INFLATED SALES, REVENUE

Whitman on Tuesday stood by Autonomy's technology and products, saying the unit would still be the growth engine for HP. The sprawling company, which employs more than 300,000 people globally, aims to focus more on enterprise services in the mold of International Business Machines Corp.

But the former eBay CEO and California gubernatorial candidate has yet to overcome years of management turmoil and strategic missteps, including a plan to sell the personal computer unit that was later dropped.

HP disclosed the Autonomy allegations in conjunction with its fourth-quarter earnings, which showed a 6.7 percent decline in revenues as well as a $6.85 billion loss.

It took $8.8 billion in charges in the quarter, with over $5 billion tied to the problems at Autonomy. The rest of the charge related to the "recent trading value of HP stock and headwinds against anticipated synergies and marketplace performance," HP said without elaborating.

HP has since embarked on an internal investigation, including a forensic review of Autonomy's historical results by PricewaterhouseCoopers and HP General Counsel John Schultz.

It accuses Autonomy's former management of inflating revenue and gross margins to mislead potential buyers. It said Autonomy executives mischaracterized revenue from low-end hardware sales as software sales and booked some licensing deals with partners as revenue, even though no customer bought products.

It said Autonomy claimed its gross margins were in the 40 to 45 percent range while realistically they were in the 28 to 30 percent range.

Moreover, Autonomy always represented itself as a software firm but 10 percent to 15 percent of its revenue came from money-losing sales of low-end hardware, HP said.

The company also claimed that Autonomy was booking licensing revenue upfront before deals closed.

Schultz said since the accounting troubles occurred prior to the acquisition of Autonomy, it took a long time before HP was in a position to make the news public.

"Not surprisingly, Autonomy did not have sitting on a shelf somewhere a set of well-maintained books that would walk you through what was actually happening from a financial perspective inside the company," he said. "Indeed critical documents were missing from the obvious places, and it required that we look in every nook and cranny."

Yet there had been rumblings in the industry for years that Autonomy's results might not be quite what they seemed.

As early as 2009, hedge fund manager Jim Chanos had identified Autonomy as a shorting opportunity, according to a source familiar with his views.

Chief among his concerns, according to the source, was that Autonomy was claiming a 40 percent market share against the likes of Microsoft Corp, International Business Machines Corp and EMC Corp in the field of e-discovery.

Autonomy's stated margins of around 50 percent did not seem to translate proportionately into cash flow; and it was reporting double-digit organic growth in software license revenue while rivals battled shrinking sales, the person said.

During a presentation a few weeks ago entitled ?Faking Reported Income 101' at the Santangel's Investor Forum in New York, hedge fund manager John Hempton of Sydney, Australia-based Bronte Capital highlighted items on Autonomy's balance sheet that raised his concerns.

"Is it odd that in a software company you have receivables of 4.5 months? Or that deferred revenue is under half receivables?" asked Hempton, who has a short position on HP.

Last year, software firm Oracle Corp said it had looked at Autonomy but passed on it.

Whitman said Tuesday that her predecessor, Apotheker, and former Chief Strategy and Technology Officer Shane Robison were the key people behind the Autonomy acquisition. Robison left shortly after Apotheker was ousted in September 2010.

In a statement, Apotheker said he was "stunned and disappointed" by the revelations and offered to help HP and the authorities to get to the bottom of the matter.

Robert Enderle, a tech analyst at the Enderle Group, said he has never seen such a potential misrepresentation of financials.

"You have to rely on what the firm gives you during due diligence and I've never seen a misstatement at this level," Enderle said.

If the charges are true, it could result in a massive punitive damages award for HP, Enderle said.

Other analysts hoped it was the end of the bad news for HP.

"This kind of feels like the last of the bad news," Forrester analyst Frank Gillett said.

In announcing its quarterly results, HP said net revenue fell 6.7 percent to $29.96 billion for the quarter ended October 31, from $32.12 billion a year earlier. Analysts, on average, had expected $30.43 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue from all of its main business units declined, with the personal computer division recording the steepest drop, at 14 percent, while revenue from printing fell 5 percent.

HP reported a quarterly net loss of $6.85 billion, or $3.49 a share, versus a profit of $239 million, or 12 cents, a year earlier.

A well-known Raleigh businesswoman and former candidate for mayor, charged in a multi-million dollar real estate investment fraud scheme, made her first appearance in federal court today.

Carolyn W. Grant, former chair of the Chamber of Commerce, admitted that she used various businesses to solicit investments and defraud investors of millions of dollars.

Federal prosecutors had formally charged Grant with one count of mail fraud.

"When making investment decisions, investors should always consider that if it sounds too good to be true, it is," said Keith Fixel, inspector in charge of the Charlotte division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

In 2011, the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State and the N.C. Real Estate Commission launched investigations into the financial dealings of Grant, a real estate investor, and her company, Omega Property Group.

The Securities Division of the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State issued a cease and desist order against Grant and Omega Property Group on Sept. 27, 2011. A temporary order was issued in August 2011 for alleged violations of the North Carolina Securities Act.
